Comment moderation for news sites

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I created this simple flow diagram for our editors who are new to comment moderation and comment spam.

When you’ve moderated a lot of blogs and seen a lot of spam you begin to learn the difference between spam and a genuine comment ( admittedly sometimes i just can’t tell)

So this diagram is for our new editors on some of our news sites. Getting a site in Google news attracts a whole new level of comment spam.

Its pretty harsh set of rules, comments will get zapped if you:

  • drop a link in your user name or the post, and use a keyword as the anchor text.
  • drop any link, then your comment needs to be outstanding.
  • drop any link, then the site linked to better be good

Wordpress slow admin interface

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

On another site i manage we have been experincing a very slow admin interface. No matter what we tried to do it was taking 30 seconds for anything to happen. No errors in logs, no errors on page, site loaded fine. Other wordpress sites on same server were working fine.

So the solution was to go into phpmyadmin and deactivate all the plugins(was too slow to deactivate them all through the wordpress admin panel). Find the field “active_plugin” in the options table and remove all the text. Once deactivated, enable each plugin one at a time through the wordpress admin panel, for us it was the alinks plugin. Never had any problems with this plugin before, but for now it has to remain disabled.

Unfortunately we cant upgrade to the latest version of alinks as its no longer compatible with our LAMLP setup. Luckily we are in the middle of creating our own lightweight fast version of alinks/cross linker type plugin.

Time for Mr Cutts and the spam team to update thier resumes

Friday, July 18th, 2008

No i havnet just found some secret sause and become some uber blackhat spammer(JasonD told me that last week), but looks like google is showing the signs of being effected by the credit crunch.

A month or so ago, Google decided to do away with subsidized daycare for their Mountain View employees, about 600 folks link

Google earnings disappoint and shares drop 8 pct link

CEO Eric Schmidt acknowledged the economic climate is “challenging.” link

If i was working for the evil empire ;) i would have my CV kept very current just in case. You dont want to be last one in job queue, i made that mistake when the last bubble burst.

Google will survive but as advertisers cutback as the crunch hits harder, google like everyone else will have to can projects and make cutbacks.

Wordpress 2.6 released

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Took the plunge and switched 2.6 on its day of release. Usually prefer to wait a week for minor patches, but need to see what changes they have made.
At first glance nothing has changed. No issues with existing plugins. Seems like there are some cool new features such as Post Revisions. http://wordpress.org/development/2008/07/wordpress-26-tyner/
